March for Babies Update

Ok, so I just wanted to post an update on our current status for March for Babies. So far, we have raised $45.00, thanks to the Battons & the Malones, who generously donated to our wonderful cause. We have set our goal this year for what it was last year: $200.00, though I would really like to surpass that amount if possible. So, we are nearly 1/4 of the way there! Thanks again! Here are some pictures of us having a ball at last year's event. Doesn't that make you want to come walk with us?

Empty House

It was a very quiet weekend indeed around our house. George and I took the children to his sister's house in Beulaville on Friday after he got home from work. Our niece, Leslie-Grace, was having a jewelry party, and our nephew, Mack, had a baseball game that evening. Here is a picture of them. LG is six months older than Skylar, and Mack is five months older than Bart. Aren't they cute?
Anyway, George's sister, Mindy, offered to keep Skylar, Bart, and Drake over the weekend - two whole nights of no children! Great, right? Yeah, sort of. It was nice to be able to sleep in until 10am on Saturday morning, then get up, shower, and go eat a leisurely brunch at Waffle House (for under $20!!!), all with no whining, fighting, or tears. We hung pictures in the house, vacuumed, did laundry, installed a new light in the kitchen, all with no whining, no fighting, and no tears from any children. So what did we do? We ended up starting an argument with one another which climaxed in - you guessed it - whining, fighting, and tears. Well, we eventually made up and made dinner together. Then I headed for the Young Women's broadcast at church and George went to a work buddy's house for poker. When I got home, I was kind of lost at not having anyone to tuck into bed or give night-night snack to. So I pigged out on Doritos while I simultaneously watched TV and read a book. I know I'm not the only one who does that, by the way!
This morning, George & I got up for church and actually made it there basically on time. We actually got to sit in a pew, not one of the folding chairs or out in the lobby. We actually got to sit there and listen in Sacrament meeting without having to take anyone to the bathroom, divvy out snacks, or mediate any toy or coloring book disputes. It was...strangely lonely. After church, we once again came home to a quiet house, ate lunch, and prepared dinner. Mindy and George's mom arrived around dinner time with our babies in tow, no worse for the wear, and a good deal cleaner than when we left them on Friday. They had all had baths and Skylar didn't have a single trace of homemade ink on her. There were lots of hugs, kisses, and yes, whining, fighting, and a few tears. But I don't think either of us minded one bit.

March of Dimes Walk for Babies

Last year as a family we raised over $200 for the March of Dimes WalkAmerica, now called March for Babies. George and I thought it was a great way to teach the kids about helping others, and have some family fun and exercise. The event was held on Roanoke Island, at Festival Park. It was absolutely wonderful walking weather. We walked about two miles, and found time to go visit Kitty Hawk and the Wright Brothers Memorial afterward. The kids were pooped, but we all felt really good about the whole experience. We couldn't have done it without the help of friends, neighbors, teachers, and of course family, who generously donated to the cause.
Again, in May, we are participating in the March for Babies and would love any support we can get. Also, anyone who might want to join us in the walk is more than welcome!

More Spring Break Fun

Today, my mom visited us. We had a long day of shopping and walking in downtown New Bern. We started out at the GoodWill, looking for costume pieces for two tap numbers for Skylar's dance recital. In one number, she has to be a "nerd", so she tried on lots of frumpy, ill-fitting dresses. One even had shoulder pads and made her look like a football player. We had some major drama (and a glimpse at the way-too-soon teenage years) as she refused to leave the dressing room. We finally settled on a dress, then headed downtown to the Cow Cafe. The kids love the Cow Cafe, as do I. It costs pretty much the same as eating at McDonald's, but the food is way yummier and there are no fries to tempt you into being naughty. And there's an awesome little barnyard play area with ride-on cows and ride-on tractors. And there's homemade ice cream in dozens of flavors (Skylar's favorite: orange pineapple). And there's an electric train that runs around one of the rooms. And there are souvenirs. Need I go on? It's just a really neat place to eat & let the kids play. After lunch, we walked around downtown, wandering over to the Tryon Palace gift shop. We walked through some of the gardens and exclaimed over all the flowers in bloom. We ended up going into Snapdragon, this really cool toy store, on our way back to the car. The kids could spend hours in Snapdragon. There is a Thomas train table which Bart left only long enough to ask me if he could buy a new Thomas. There is even a little princess room tucked away with all the cutesy, pink girl stuff you could ever imagine. Drake was pooped, and slept through most of the store, only waking up long enough to grab at a few of the displays on the way out.

Yesterday, we went to the Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores with some friends of ours, the Weekes. That's Kaleb in the green shirt above, and Skylar is holding Gwen, who's in pink. The kids all really enjoyed themselves, and were extremely tired by the time we were done. The highlight of the visit was seeing divers enter the shark tank, and visiting the otters. When we first strolled by the otters, they were both sleeping, but when we came back a little later, one of them was up and moving about. The otter became rather interested in his audience, and we all thought we were in for a show as he perched on a ledge nearby. We were all disappointed, yet sadly entertained, as he turned his back on us and proceeded to hop up and down while peeing. The grand finale was a spectacular pile of poo delivered to the childrens' shrieks of "EEW! He just pooed!" Sorry to say, I did not take any pictures of that, but isn't nature exciting? We had a nice picnic lunch outside under an umbrella, then took a short nature walk. We viewed tiny little crabs and a great blue heron out in the marsh. On the way off the island, I took Skylar, Bart, and Drake to the public beach in Atlantic Beach to walk by the water for a few minutes. We didn't stay long. It was cold on the beach and the wind whipping hard enough to knock Drake down occasionally. We did stay long enough collect some nice shells and for Drake to get sand all over his face and in his eyes. He was totally exhausted and had a meltdown when I finally had to separate him from the sand and buckle him back into the car. I think he stayed awake a total of three minutes and woke back up as we were getting back to New Bern.

Tuesday evening, while I was at my cake class, Bart finally took the training wheels off his bike and rode it successfully. He had tried last summer, but didn't feel ready yet. Well, this time he was ready. He's quite good at it, and can go really, really fast. But he has an annoying and painful habit of running into people (yesterday, he ran into me three times, Skylar twice, and Drake once). He rides virtually without any fear. Tonight, he was showing off his riding skills for my mom when George commandeered his bike and took off around the cul-de-sac on it. One of our neighbors seemed a little startled to see a large man on a little bike riding by his house, and I could hardly blame him.

While Bart was learning how to ride "like a big boy" on Tuesday evening, I was at my last cake class for the session. I created a ten-inch double layer cake with roses on top. It was quite tricky. The roses are harder to make than they look, and icing gets everywhere. I attempted to make a nice, peach-colored icing for my roses, but it ended up turning out Halloween orange. With the green stems and words added to the orange roses, it really did look like a Halloween cake. Apparently, mixing icing colors is something I need more practice at. I made a rainbow cake during my second class and decided to pipe the words "Young Women" on it and take it to the Young Women activity the following Wednesday. The girls really seemed to like it, and it was nice not having the entire cake lying around at home, just begging to be eaten.

Spring Break

The children are out on Spring Break this week, and I have to say it is nice to have them at home. All activities are on hold: no dance, no karate, no Wednesday night church activities. They were actually just able to play outside today for several hours, doing something my sister and I did when we were little out in the country. They collected berries from our backyard and made ink "like the Indians used to." Bart exclaimed, "Mom, we're the first kids to ever make ink like this!" They have had a ball.

Yesterday, which was Easter, we went to church in the morning. When we returned home, we had a little egg hunt in our front yard before going to some friends' house for Easter dinner. We hid real hard-boiled eggs for Skylar and Bart to find, and several painted tin eggs for Drake to find. Drake is pretty hard on Easter eggs. Convinced that they're "balls", he never fails to throw them, and he's got a pretty good arm. So, Skylar and Bart turned the egg hunt into a competition, as usual. They had each found the exact same number of eggs, when George told them there was only one egg left to find and he hinted to them that it was in the area of our mailbox. So both kids take off running right away, only Skylar sets her basket down first, but Bart hangs on to his. It was a recipe for disaster. They both reach the mailbox at the same time, but - boom! - Bart trips & tips his basket, and there go some of the hard-boiled eggs, flying into the street. One of them even rolls across into the neighbors' yard. Of course he was distraught, and it didn't help matters that George videotaped it all and we were laughing like hyenas the whole time. That's the great part of having kids, right? Making fun of them?

After our egg hunt, we headed over to our friends' house, along with some other couples from church. We had a really great dinner and I made this sunflower cake in the picture. It certainly wasn't perfect or anything, but I was pretty proud of it. I had a hard time keeping Bart from snitching one of the peeps.
